the unexpected birth story

Sunday, May 6th, 2007 and Monday, May 7th, 2007

The plan all along with baby #2 was to try for a natural delivery. Alister was born by an elective caesarean because he was breech (upside-down) but I really wanted to have a go this time. The only requirement was that I went into labor on my own by my due date, which in France was a week later (they have 41 week pregnancies here for some reason). I thought May 6th left plenty of time but sadly we found ourselves heading off to the hospital Sunday night to check in for a caesarean scheduled for the following morning.

So imagine our surprise when I went into labor about an hour after we arrived! In the morning, the doctor decided to postpone the surgery until after lunch. In the afternoon, they decided things were moving along fine and I could go ahead with a natural birth. I was absolutely thrilled! It was tough but worth it (I think) in the end.
